We grow hops on around 200 ares. The harvest of the wonderful wide-spanning facilities is solely intended for the Original Ittingen Klosterbräu and covers the requirements for the entire production in its entirety.
Our new hop garden
Hops come from the medicinal herb garden of the monks. They discovered its wonderful effect in the beer. WE have been growing hops again in Ittingen Charterhouse since 1983. In spring 2001, we also constructed a new wide-ranging facility covering 17,000 m2. From the monastery walls to the path chapel of St. Bruno, over the expanses of the Thur plateau, stretches today one of the finest located hop fields of the Lake Constance region. Here, on 7000 twines grows what later gives the Original Ittingen Klosterbräu its unmistakable character, its brilliant shine and its superb foam: More than 3500 kilos of valuable hop blossoms.
The hop, humulus lupulus, is a dieocious twine plant. Only the unpollinated female blossoms are used to brew beer. In addition to bitter substances, the umbels develop ethereal oils. A gentle brewing process guarantees that the bitter substances and the oil can develop well in the boiling beer juice and thus develop a full, rounded beer aroma.
Hops of the sort Pearler and Hallertauer tradition grow and blossom in our hop gardens. The blossom umbels are harvested at the end of August each year. You can find out a lot about the hop on an informative tour of the small hop garden.
