The labyrinth is seen as the original symbol of mankind, for example as the symbol of man’s journey through life. In contrast to a maze, the path of a labyrinth takes you safely to its centre, where, however, winding paths, about-turns and intransparent sections are part and parcel of the journey.
The labyrinth in Ittingen Charterhouse embodies the type of the so-called Otfried labyrinth that occurs in medieval monastery manuscripts in Alsace and in St. Gallen. It is planted with many types of thyme, has a diameter of 16 m and a walking length of 205 m. It is freely accessible.
On request, we would be pleased to give you an introduction or accompany you through the labyrinth. Information under the telephone number 0041 52 748 41 41.
In the summer half-year we enter the labyrinth on the last Friday evening of each month and will sustain ourselves on the path that takes us to the centre with bread and grape juice.
