Some questions are better asked quietly. For example, whether it is love. Or death. Sometimes the two sound the same. Arvo Pärt allows the elderly Simeon to say his goodbyes calmly and almost cheerfully. Schubert's E-flat major trio conveys a sense of mourning, but one that sings rather than confesses. And Reimann listens to Mendelssohn, interrupting him to think further, contradict and remember. Because sometimes, stopping is the moment when everything begins. Or does it mean death?
