Without darkness, there would be no stars. This is why the second edition of Ittinger Sternstunden is dedicated to the theme of night. It signifies freedom after the hustle and bustle of the day: a space for creativity, romance and adventure. “We need the night to experience, explore and talk about hidden, forbidden and forgotten worlds,” says cultural and literary scholar Elisabeth Bronfen.

Drawing on her brilliant cultural history of the night, she sheds light on the past through literature, art, psychoanalysis and cinema.

On this Walpurgis Night, Elisabeth Bronfen will explore the theme of darkness together with Nicola Steiner, a cultural journalist, literary critic and director of the Zurich Literaturhaus.

Based on the book Tiefer als der Tag gedacht (Deeper than the Day Thought, Hanser Verlag, 2008), the two will explore mysterious nocturnal worlds of security, apparitions, transformations and new beginnings.
