Dreamy gardens in monastic idyll

The beauty of the flower gardens is enhanced by vineyards, hop gardens, vegetable plots and herb gardens.
A monastic idyll with dreamlike gardens
People have lived and worked in Kartause Ittingen for centuries, leaving their mark on the landscape. Over time, an impressive garden complex has developed, where vineyards, hops, vegetables and herbs merge with the floral splendour of the flower gardens to create something truly unique.
In early summer, over a thousand rose bushes bearing more than 250 varieties, most of which are historic, transform Kartause Ittingen into a romantic floral wonderland. In collaboration with the Winterthur Rose Society, the Kartause Ittingen Foundation maintains the greatest diversity of historic rose varieties in Switzerland and makes them accessible to the public. The thyme bed and the thyme labyrinth offer opportunities for self-discovery and contemplation. The Ittinger Forest is also an oasis for nature lovers and those seeking relaxation.
Walks around the Kartause Ittingen
There are twelve route suggestions for walks or hikes, ranging in length from 30 minutes to four hours, which cover a wide variety of topics.

Experience the monastery complex on a walk alongside the water to the historic fountains.
In the middle of the garden restaurant stands the impressive octagonal fountain with a central column, on top of which is a statue of Saint Lawrence, the monastery’s patron saint. This is the most visible testament to the monastery’s water management system. Several other abundant fountains can be found on the grounds of Kartause Ittingen, providing visible evidence of the former Carthusian monastery’s plentiful water resources. Follow the Water Route (Route 11). To this day, these fountains are fed by the abundant spring at the foot of the vineyard slope behind the monastery.
