Sleep just as the Carthusian monks once did: in the Ittingen box bed, you’ll experience a unique sense of cosiness. Natural materials such as fir wood and sheep’s wool create a peaceful atmosphere and provide a soothing, sheltered feeling of space.

An overnight stay steeped in history

From 24 April 2027, 15 Ittingen box beds will be available. Our smallest room category is aimed at guests who are specifically looking for a unique overnight experience or who prefer an original and affordable alternative to a traditional hotel room. Stripped back to the essentials, the Ittinger Kastenbett are ideal for short stays.

In front of each box bed, there is a desk with a chair and practical storage space. The toilet and shower facilities are located in the corridor. As the box beds are situated in the basement of the "Oberes Gästehaus", they do not have natural light, but they do enjoy a very good indoor climate thanks to a direct supply of fresh air.

The Ittinger Kastenbett is the only room category that does not have an en-suite bathroom. Modern bathrooms with individual cubicles are provided separately for ladies and gentlemen outside the box bed.

A visit to Ittinger Museum

If you have time, immerse yourself in history and round off this authentic experience with a visit to the Ittinger Museum. Among other things, it offers a glimpse into a former monk’s cell, where Carthusian monks lived in silence as hermits, devoting themselves to prayer and their crafts, tending their own little garden and – in a box bed – sleeping.
